SEN Competition

Girl with coloured ballsThe Innovation Unit, working with the Special Educational Needs & Disability Division (SENDD) in the former DfES, offered funding to support innovative ideas which provide creative and innovative solutions to the use of staff in Behavioural Emotional Social Difficulties (BESD), educational settings that will improve access to the curriculum and standards for children with complex BESD and mental health difficulties. This involves working with partners in CAMHS to develop staff skills and innovative training and support ideas to achieve this. Submissions were invited from Special Schools, Pupil Referral Units or Learning Support Units working together or collaborating with mainstream schools and other agencies. Work was undertaken from January to October 2005.

16 multi-agency partnerships were chosen by an evaluation panel consisting of:

  • 3 Practitioners (two Heads of Special Schools and one Head of a PRU);
  • a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Adviser;
  • an HMI from Ofsted;
  • a representative from a national charity committed to improving the mental health of all children and young people;
  • 2 representatives from the former DfES SENDD Policy Team; and
  • a Director of The Innovation Unit.

The evaluators looked at applications across a range of criteria: coverage (ie cohort of pupils involved); potential impact for pupils; composition of participants; 'innovativeness' of plans; focus of activities; focus on mental health needs; cost, complexity and risk; potential learning for the system; potential for scalability and replicability; and robustness of evaluation plans.

Celebration and Dissemination Event - 12 July 2005

A celebration and dissemination event was held for 65 delegates in London on 12 July 2005. Representatives from 13 of the 16 projects, a mixture of teaching assistants, teachers, headteachers, educational psychologists and LA representatives, engaged with policy makers and others.

The objectives of the event were to:

  • celebrate the progress made in each of the multi-agency partnerships;
  • highlight the early impacts on staff and pupils;
  • link practitioners with policy makers to share learning and insights on developing future policy; and
  • provide an opportunity for the partnerships to showcase their work and network with others.

A copy of the presentation panels used can be downloaded here  (1.7 MB).
