Drama Evaluation Video

Studying drama at KS3 gives students plenty of opportunity to enjoy practical work. This work is assessed and is a vital part of the course. Teachers in the Kirklees Education Authority were keen to make a video of a drama session to help them assess students' work and create benchmarks which all teachers would work to and understand.

Students are assessed on their ability to create, perform and respond. At Colne Valley High School near Huddersfield, the teachers have organised a day's workshop with two other schools, so that attainment levels can be compared and moderated. Students are given visual resources and quotations to stimulate the imagination. The story they are working on revolves around a witch and a mysterious disappearance. The full range of abilities were represented in this session. To gain a level four, students have to express their own ideas, but also listen to other people's suggestions; for a level six, students have to challenge and extend the ideas of others, seeing the piece of drama as a whole.

The session was filmed and a drama evaluation video will be available for use by drama teachers.
