Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation - Southernway Federation

A two-shift school day

This Federation (an amalgamation of two primary schools, one junior and one infant school with a single governing body) will introduce a two-shift school day 8am - 1pm and 1pm to 6pm during a four week pilot in the Summer Term 2007. 40-60 pupils in Years 2-3 from all four schools will participate, with the remaining children acting as control groups. All groups will be tested before and after the pilot in order to assess whether pupils' learning capacities will be enhanced by working at times that meet their needs, and where a wider range of enrichment activities will be available to them. It is hoped that the pilot will also test parental demand for the shift approach - many parents are shift workers and have problems getting children to school in the morning. Finally the pilot will explore the financial implications for making more flexible the working arrangements of teaching staff.
