Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation - Events

Students and teachers in the library

Resourcing Personalisation Event - The story continues ...

The second regional event "Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation: The story continues" took place on Wednesday 14 November 2007 at Bridgemary Community Sports College, Gosport. The day was held in the College's Learning Resources Centre, and a number of students from Bridgemary were involved in transforming the space from a library into an open conference space.

Delegates at the event Nearly 80 delegates attended from a total of 17 field trial sites, including a number of students from Bridgemary College. During the event, the delegates used an approach called Open Space Technology, which enables groups of any size to address complex important issues and achieve meaningful results quickly. Facilitated by The Innovation Unit's Gene Payne, participants at the event created and managed their own agenda of parallel working sessions around this central theme:

"How can we begin to build a national guide to Resourcing Personalisation?"

The sessions were run by participants and harnessed their deeply felt passion and energy about many aspects of personalised learning. They considered together how their work can be built into a national guide to Resourcing personalisation.

Here are just some of the sessions that were offered:

  • Personalisation: why is it necessary?
  • Reorganising a large school
  • Junior leadership
  • Leading system change
  • Using time differently
  • Encouraging adults to open their minds.

Among the participants were David Albury and Charles Desforges, who offered a session entitled "Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation: The story continues - thoughts, reflections, challenges". Read the transcript of the session here - The Story Continues - thoughts, reflections, challenges.

Throughout the day, session reports were posted on the Next Practice Acceleration Space (NPAS) - a collaborative, knowledge-sharing webspace designed by and for practitioners. More about NPAS here.

Man and woman talkingWhat delegates said

"What an amazing day!"

"We transcended information exchange."

"My head is buzzing, thanks for filling it up."

"Open Space helped me challenge the answers I thought I had, and helped me feel more secure in what I'm doing."

"Argumentative debate took place, and this is a good thing - I'm going back to school with loads of ideas."

"I came with a question, and the answer I got was ten times better than any I thought I would get, or could have imagined."

"I had lots of scepticism [about Open Space Technology] at the start of the day, but thank you for the headache of ideas and things to do."

Resourcing Personalisation Event - The story so far

On Thursday 28 June 2007, the field trial sites of the Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation project met to discuss 'the story so far'. For further details see the Resourcing Personalisation Event - The Story So Far page.

Launching our 17 Field Trial Sites

Delegates at the Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation Launch Event The Innovation Unit, in partnership with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, welcomed representatives of the 17 field trial sites to the National Launch and Exchange Event for our Next Practice in Resourcing Personalisation project.

This event took place on Monday, 26th February 2007 at the Novotel London West, Hammersmith, West London. It highlighted those taking part in 18 months of structured working, going beyond the best of what's currently happening in schools to imagine and develop what will be Next Practice in education, and how this can be the flagship for system-wide transformation.

Developing Young Minds: Innovative Education

Margaret Wilkinson is a Jungian Analyst and former teacher, who has been Special Needs Co-ordinator at Crown Woods School and an Advisory Teacher, with responsibility for developing the differentiated curriculum in secondary schools in the London Borough of Sutton. At the launch event, Margaret's thought-provoking presentation suggested that innovative approaches to personalised learning will be informed by an appreciation of the complex development of the young learner's brain.
