Evaluating personalised learning
The field trial will look at different methods of engaging with students and evaluating different learning experiences. At present in Year 7 they split the cohort into four groupings used to determine the students' performance not only academically but in Learn2Learn situations. These groups include an ‘induction' group (2 x 18), a ‘foundation' group (2 x 25), a ‘standard' group (2 x 30) and a ‘condensed' group (2 x 32). The students follow a curriculum with different time slots and approaches e.g. the induction group is taught 16 periods a week primary style curriculum. The college wants to develop a QA mechanism, through video observations and peer assessments, to look at the quality of learning across the different groups. They will start off by focussing on the personalised learning in the Learn2Learn and AFL work but intend to make this a more generic tool that could be available to all.
The college understands how the QA system they developed for evaluating teaching has improved performance in teachers and students. They want to produce a sustainable tool for others to use against the learning situations that are created in any school. They will be evaluating a wider range of learning experiences including students in classroom, outside curriculum influences and the impact of different feedback mechanisms.
