Communities for Learning in the 21st Century - 23 January 2008

Delegates at Communities for Learning in the 21st Century The Communities for Learning project held their second event Communities for Learning in the 21st Century on 23 January 2008 at field trial Chalvedon School and Sixth Form College in Essex. Forty-eight delegates and representatives from 11 field trials attended. The Head, Alan Roach, and students from the Chalvedon field trial opened the conference by stressing the importance of innovation for the future of schooling. Dame Professor Pat Collarbone then offered a keynote thought piece Communities for Learning in the 21st Century which focused on the 3 key areas of learning emerging from the project to date:

  • the ways in which the community is contributing to students' learning
  • the changing roles and responsibilities of teachers and support staff
  • the implications for leading and managing communities for learning.

Representatives from individual field trials then took it in turns to present their insights into these three areas in short presentations to the whole group.

Students talking to delegates After lunch, students from Bridgemary Community Sports College offered their experience of participating in one of the Resourcing Personalisation Field Trials, and provided their perspective on what teaching in the 21st century could and should look like.

Group discussion Throughout the day, delegates were asked to discuss and record their responses to the presentations and other inputs. This enabled the collation of emergent themes, burning questions to other colleagues, and ideas for Next steps, which will be posted on the Innovation Unit's Next Practice Acceleration Space.

It was an extremely interesting and stimulating day, which produced a range of insights into the future of teaching and learning. These are crucial to both The Innovation Unit and The Teacher Development Agency as they consider the future of the project after March 08.

Delegates at the Next Practice in Communities for Learning Launch EventOn 27 June 2007, The Innovation Unit, in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), welcomed representatives from 11 field trial sites to the National Launch and Exchange Event for the Next Practice project in Communities for Learning. This, the third project in the Next Practice programme, considers new sources of support for children's learning - within and beyond the school.

Jim Knight Jim Knight, the Minister of State for Schools and 14-19 learners, joined delegates at Westminster Central Hall in London for the official launch of the project, due to run until March 2008.

In the next few months, The Innovation Unit, TDA and practitioners from the field trial sites are committed collectively to investigate how a remodelled workforce can further improve the quality of children's learning.

Delegates at the Next Practice in Communities for Learning Launch Event In practice this means exploring the implications for the professional role and responsibilities of teachers when support staff, members of the wider community and students themselves can become involved in learning. The trials vary in focus, but many look at how students can be involved in designing the curriculum, new roles for community practitioners, as well as larger scale cultures of achievement in multi-agency settings.
