Engaging in Children's Literacy

This project aims to align with and add value to Leicestershire Local Authority's involvement in the DCSF two-year pilot ‘Making Good Progress'. Close work is being carried out with two Leicestershire schools and a group of parents from each to explore how parental involvement and understanding can add value to one-to-one tuition and ensure that children make better progress in literacy.

The project builds on the national hypothesis that one-to-one tuition for children who are struggling with literacy raises achievement, and aims to evidence the additional significant benefit of parent and carer engagement in this process.

Key Benefits:

The positive outcomes from this work include:

• The development of a shared understanding between parents and schools as to how best to support children who are falling behind in literacy.

• Progress shown in engaging ‘hard to reach' parents in starting to communicate more effectively with schools around supporting their children's attainment in literacy and wider development at school.

• Work towards tackling parents' own literacy needs and barriers to supporting their children's development.

• Schools reconsidering better options of reporting progress to parents.
