School Professional Industry Network

This project aims to harness parents' professional networks to offer pupils industry exposure and support in researching careers options and accessing Higher Education. This will be facilitated through an online portal which is being built, designed and maintained by the students from the Guru Nanak Voluntary Aided Secondary School.

Pupils at the school will benefit from being able to find out more about the career options open to them and the specific qualifications required to pursue these. Subsequently it is envisaged that parts of this service could be made available nationally and other schools/groups of parents supported to set up the school-specific elements.

The careers advice and support is also targeted at parents with less skilled occupations, and particularly focused on the 20% of hard-to-reach parents.

Key Benefits:

• Parent-parent support: The project is being constructed by parents drawn from different professional backgrounds, and encouraging mutual support between parents (especially those with low skills) and greater involvement in the school.
• Impact on pupils: Pupils are being given access to a wider range of expertise beyond their own family from the professional world through a safe and trusted mechanism. It is also aiming to give positive role models and motivation for continuing to further and higher education.
• Co-production between parents and pupils: The project gives pupils responsibility to manage the project but also to work alongside parents to develop a collaborative and sustainable model of co-production.
