Applied Next Practice Service Offer
Applied Next Practice is a model for local innovation which builds from and utilises the learning from The Innovation Unit's Next Practice programmes. It also incorporates a partnership with Bridge who bring significant experience in designing support for pioneering leadership and leadership of change (The Bridge Change Leadership Framework).
The Innovation Unit is keen to work with a limited number of Local Authorities and with the most aspirational local leaders determined to solve intractable problems; with those who want to achieve a disclipined approach to radical innovation in their locality; with those willing to share their learning widely.
Our Applied Next Practice Service Offer supports projects developing pioneering solutions which are:
- Future-focused and user-focused - the leaders we work with recognise that doing a good job for now is not enough ... that their real challenge is to consider both the current and future needs of service users and create new systems which will secure long-term improvement
- Collaborative - creating and implementing new systems and services requires mobilisation of local partnerships around a shared vision for change
- Content-rich - we utilise emerging Next Practice insights from other localities and from key fields (eg system leadership and governance or personalisation of learning).
Principles underpinning our approach
- Only system transformation - we don't work with everyone. We choose locations with a deep commitment to the development of Applied Next Practice which has the potential for system transformation.
- Working in partnership - the sum of the project is what both parties bring to the table. Projects won't be successful unless we design and build our work together, understand our distinctive roles and hold each other to account.
- Co-design - working together at the project definition and design state, collaboratively reviewing progress and collectively agreeing any adjustments to the plan.
- Long-term, sustainable improvement - ideally, we work on projects for no less than one year and preferably longer. Our intention is to deliver and embed real change in practice.
- Capacity building - we act as critical friends and coaches to key leaders in localities (pioneering leaders) to develop the skills needed to lead change, and focus on building innovative capacity.
