Next Practice in Communities for Learning - The Young Foundation

Studio Schools

The Young Foundation's Studio School concept is being trialled by Barnfield College in Luton. Studio Schools is a national project which, ultimately, will be based in 8 local areas that incorporates real-work and project-based learning within a small school setting with an explicit focus on non-cognitive skills.

The project-based curriculum, within a business themed environment is linked to vocational and academic qualifications, and students develop a portfolio of these non-cognitive skills throughout the year, ensuring they are better prepared for the world of work. As the field trial progresses, students will have the opportunity to work in a number of local businesses within the college, further developing their enterprise skills, whilst developing business plans which may lead onto separate student-led ventures. Through this approach Studio Schools seek to increase engagement amongst its students and prepare them more efficiently to be enterprising employees for the 21st century.
