Primary Middle Leaders: Effective Practice in Action

Middle leaders are crucial in the development of learning and teaching throughout the school

To better understand the role middle leaders play and how they can achieve maximum benefit for pupil outcomes NCSL has studied how middle leaders in primary schools lead learning in classrooms and across the school.

NCSL and The Innovation Unit have collaborated in producing a DVD and accompanying booklet of school-based practice which portrays effective middle leaders and headteachers in action. It describes and analyses behaviours in terms of:

• what middle leaders do and how they do it
• how their headteachers support them
• what conditions enable them to be effective.

The project focuses on six primary schools across the country and shows how the twelve middle leaders in these schools improve standards and learning.
